Most towns spread their summer across a scattered calendar and hope residents build their own loops between events. New Albany does the opposite. The city has quietly engineered a single weeknight to carry most of the season, and once you notice the handoff, you stop planning around it and start planning through it.
That night is Thursday. From early June through late August, a two-block stretch between Market Square and the Hinson Amphitheater turns into one long continuous event, and the new arrivals landing on Main Street this year are all sizing themselves to that same walking radius.
The 4-To-8:30 Handoff Nobody Announces
The mechanism is simple, and it is not accidental. The Healthy New Albany Farmers Market runs Thursdays, June 4 through August 27, 4 to 7 p.m. at 200 Market St. in New Albany's Market Square. Ninety minutes later, the amphitheater lights come up. The Free Summer Concert Series is held at the Hinson Amphitheater, 170 E. Dublin-Granville Rd., every other Thursday from June 11 through August 6, with doors at 6:30 p.m. and the show from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
The city says the pairing is on purpose. Concerts are scheduled on select Thursdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m., perfectly timed to follow the Healthy New Albany Farmers Market, so you can grab your local, farm-fresh finds, snag a drink from a DORA establishment and settle in for an evening. That's the piece that turns two separate events into one Thursday: the DORA cup carries from the market vendors and the shops around Market Street straight onto the amphitheater lawn.
A few practical notes that residents figure out by their second Thursday of the year:
You're welcome to bring outside food and drink, including alcoholic beverages purchased from a DORA location in a DORA cup. No food or alcohol will be sold at the event. Bring a chair and a refillable water bottle. The Hinson Amphitheater can hit capacity, requiring attendees arriving after capacity is reached to enjoy the show from the lawn.
If you have kids in tow, the lawn is the answer anyway. If you don't, the reserved amphitheater seating is worth the earlier arrival, which means eating from the market's food trucks rather than sitting down somewhere.
What Thursday Nights Actually Sound Like
This is where the schedule gets specific enough to plan around. The 2026 Free Summer Concert Series presents the Catalina Wine Mixer Band on Thursday, July 9 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Hinson Amphitheater. Catalina Wine Mixer is the ultimate yacht rock band, promising the sweet sounds of the 70s, which is a specific kind of crowd: blankets, wine, people who negotiated bedtime with a sitter.
Two Thursdays later, the room flips. The Free Summer Concert Series presents Big Bad Stache on Thursday, July 23 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the amphitheater, and Big Bad Stache's rock and pop covers from the 90s through today have you singing at the top of your lungs. That's the night to bring the teenagers. The School of Rock Gahanna House Band opens, which is worth arriving early for even if you don't recognize the name.
The final concert of the run lands on August 6. If your Thursdays feel light after that, they're supposed to.
The Main Street Arrivals Sizing Themselves To The Walk
The reason Thursday works is the walk. Market Square, Main Street, and the amphitheater sit inside a radius you can cover in flat shoes, and the businesses opening on that spine this year know it. Three arrivals are worth having on your radar.
The most talked-about is Harvest Pizzeria. The New Albany location at 24 E. Main St. is expected to open in the fall, and the restaurant is known for sourcing all products locally from fellow small businesses and farms. The address matters. The New Albany location will replace the former 24 Main bar and restaurant, which closed with little context in 2025, and the site is steps from another pizza shop, Eagles Villa Pizza. The Harvest team addressed the awkwardness of that head-on. "We will be supporting Eagles as well, they're amazing at Ohio style pizza in a traditional setting." Two pizzerias inside the same block is not a saturation problem in a town whose Thursday night regularly parks 400 people on a lawn.
Then there is Hayley Gallery, which anchors the visual arts side of Market Street at 260 Market St. and treats the summer as opening season. The artist opening reception for Priya Rama and Evangelia Philippidis, In My Head, In My Heart, runs 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 18 at Hayley Gallery. A gallery opening that starts at 5 is a gallery opening designed for people who ate at the market first.
Bendi Wok N' Bar is the sit-down piece of the puzzle. Located at 160 W. Main Street, Bendi brings wok-fired stir fry, curries, fresh rice and noodle dishes, shareable starters, handcrafted cocktails, sake, and favorites like Pad Thai, positioned as a polished but approachable option for lunch, date night, happy hour, or a group dinner. On a non-concert Thursday, that's your table.
The Nights That Break The Thursday Pattern
Not every summer night in New Albany runs on the market-and-amphitheater beat. A handful of dates pull residents out of the Thursday routine, and they're the ones to circle now.
- Sunday, July 26 — Taste of New Albany. Taste of New Albany is happening on Sunday, July 26 from 5:00 PM at Rose Run Park. This is the one that moves the crowd off Market Street and onto the park's boardwalk.
- Tuesday, July 14 — Free Family Flick: Ratatouille. Free Family Flick: Ratatouille is happening on Tuesday, July 14 from 7:30 PM at the Charleen & Charles Hinson Amphitheater. A Tuesday movie at the amphitheater is the softest reset button the calendar has.
- Tuesday, August 11 — Free Family Flick: Lion King. Free Family Flick: Lion King is happening on Tuesday, August 11 from 7:30 PM at the Charleen & Charles Hinson Amphitheater.
- Thursday, August 13 — Amp Up the Arts. Amp Up the Arts featuring Brass Transit and the Music of Chicago is happening on Thursday, August 13 from 7:00 PM at the Charleen & Charles Hinson Amphitheater. A brass-forward tribute to Chicago is a very different lawn energy than a covers band, and it's worth planning dinner early.
- Saturday, August 15 — ProMusica at Headley Park. ProMusica Chamber Orchestra: LIVE at Headley Park is happening on Saturday, August 15 from 4:00 PM at Headley Park. A chamber orchestra outdoors in the late afternoon light is the least-crowded great sound in New Albany all summer.
If you want to test whether you've fully absorbed the town's rhythm, notice that even the exceptions are still walkable from the same core. Rose Run Park, the amphitheater, Headley Park, and Market Square are all inside the loop. The Fourth of July sits inside it too. New Albany Independence Day Fireworks light off from Rose Run Park, and the New Albany Independence Day 5K starts at Market Square, 180 Market St.
The Radius, Not The Calendar
Most guides to a town's summer treat the calendar as the point. In New Albany, the calendar is downstream of the geography. The reason a Thursday night works, the reason Harvest and Hayley and Bendi are opening where they're opening, the reason the fireworks and the 5K and the concert series all share the same two-block spine, is that the town has been quietly building around one walking radius for years. Summer is when that radius is easiest to see.
Which is a longer way of saying that if you already live here, you don't actually need a schedule this July. You need a Thursday, a chair, and shoes you can walk in.
